To steam rice without a steamer:
Rinse the rice
Run the rice under water and drain before cooking. This removes the excess starch on the rice, allowing the rice to be fluffy once cooked.
Transfer to a pot
Place the rinsed rice in a pot that has a heavy bottom and a well-fitting lid.
Using the correct amount of water is important for this process. Generally, mix 1 cup of long-grain white rice with 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 cups of water. Adjust the water ratio depending on the type of rice and personal preferences.
Combine the rice, water and desired seasonings in the pot, and bring to a boil over high heat. Once the water begins to boil, immediately drop the heat to low, cover and allow the rice to simmer for about 10 to 12 minutes.
Let it rest
Once the water is fully absorbed, turn off the heat and leave the lid on. Allow the rice to sit for an additional 5 to 30 minutes. The steam in the pot will continue cooking the rice. Then gently stir and serve as desired.
